In the first picture, one of our group members is making small tables and chairs. Second picture is a 'door' that we are going to put at the exit. As for the colourful ice cream sticks in the third picture, we will continue to stick it until it is long enough for the outline of the room.

Notice

We decided to change our design of playground. We found out that some of the children don't even dare to walk up the stairs so we decided to change our draft. We find that everybody will be doing playground that has stairs, slides, see-saws etc... We decided to make our playground an indoor playground. We will be using tunnels to let those who are phobia of heights to crawl into the tunnels to different parts of our playground.

Our Drafts

Although we had changed our target group, we will still be adding some of the objects in Figure 3 and combining it with Figure 1. In Figure 2, this are the objects that we will also be adding into Figure 1. In Figure 1, there is a double slide at the back of the stairs. There will also be a bridge connecting from one side of the playground to the another side. At the other side of playground, there will also be a slide there. For the stairs in figure 2, we will be replacing it with the stairs in Figure 3. In Figure 2, There are merry-go-round, see-saw, swings and etc. We will be putting those into Figure 1. As we had so called restarted the whole process of making a playground, we only had the draft done. However, I will update the final draft by next week together with the pictures of our playground.

Our Research

The Phobia Of Heights Is A Common Problem

One of the most common fears we get to help people with is the phobia of heights. This can range from extreme nervousness in tall buildings to utter panic at the thought of going up a flight of steps. In fact, very occasionally the thought of going up two or three steps made them feel terrified!

The Fear Of Heights Is The Fear Of Falling

Usually, the way this manifests in consciousness is that the closer the person gets to the ‘drop' the more they vividly imagine either jumping off or falling. It is this thought that causes the adrenal release and subsequent panic response.

The prime characteristic of any phobia is intense anxiety. The associated physical symptoms include rapid heart rate, sweating, trembling, fast breathing, muscular tension and weaknesses, butterflies in stomach, nausea and breathlessness.

The behavioral symptoms or characteristics of phobia are either fleeing from the people of 'freezing'. The later makes the victim rooted to the spot. The victims of social phobias suffers from emotional disorders like shame, embarrassment, anger and security.

Victims may suffer from negative thoughts like 'That might have killed me', 'people are too reckless', 'How I looked like a fool', 'Everyone enjoyed my fumbled speech and my shaking limbs' and etc.

People with phobias react differently against the phobias depending on their body-chemistry and mental set-up. Phobia is very much treatable if one do not feel that they are high above the ground.

How Can They Overcome Fear of Heights in Their Life?

The best way to overcome fear of heights is to replace the negative emotions you have toward heights – the dizziness, the nausea, and the panic – with positive emotions, such as euphoria and glee. The best way to do this is through the tested magic of self-hypnosis.

How Can Our Playground Help Them?

We will try our best to make the playground attractive to attract them and help them overcome their fears by making our slides higher and make the slide look as if it was not high by putting some pictures onto the slide which get along with the ground floor. Also, we will also make a bridge using net together with 'wooden blocks'(cardboard) as the base.

Why tampines playground are not really suitable for people with phobia of heights

In this picture, is a yellow pole where kids can slide down. However, We think that it is too dangerous for these kids. For children whom might have phobia of heights, might scare to death before they even touch the pole as the poles are usually quite long to let the children slide down. When the pole is longer, the height to place the pole will be higher. When the height is higher, children with phobia of height will not even climb up and see how high because by standing on the ground floor they could clearly see how high is it and will not play with it.One of our member, Ru Hui, has phobia of heights. She stated that when she was young, she didn't dare to slide down the pole because she thinks that the pole was placed too high at that point of time. She was scared that she might fall and what if she let go of her hands halfway?she started to imagine a lot of negative things and decided not to play with the pole. Thus, in order for kids not to have phobia towards our playground, we are not going to use this pole as well as to ensure their safety.
